Dr. Motte and The Loveparade
“We wanted to hold the Love Parade in Berlin again this year, and we succeeded in making that happen – which, of course, makes me very happy.” Such was the announcement of Loveparade initiator Dr. Motte. The event was ultimately made possible by selling interests to the investor Rainer Schaller of McFitness GmbH.
But as far as the Loveparade itself is concerned, Dr. Motte has now decided to step back.
According to Motte, “My interest was and continues to be the presentation of contemporary music culture in all its facets, with no exclusions of any kind. It’s about substance, cultural development, and the demonstration of artistic work, all aided by a platform developed for these very purposes – the parade.”
If the “old” Love Parade possessed a particular key to success, it would have been the quality of its content, from the selection of DJs to the design of trailers and floats – not to mention the music. “The Berlin Loveparade did not suffer from a lack of substance, but rather from external circumstances,” emphasized Dr. Motte.
The Love Parade was and remains an international platform. Initial discussions about the content of the parade broke down amongst participating organizers not because of a particular aesthetic direction demanded by Dr.Motte, but because of various specific interests. “I’m not at all interested in being associated with just any “electronic dance parade”. So I have decided not to stand in the way of any new developments and I withdrew from decisions about the exact creative direction the parade would take. I hope all participants in the Love Parade in Berlin will be able to maintain the spirit and that the event continues to be a peaceful one for all involved.”
The Love Parade has served as a trailblazer and template for several national and international parades, including those in Hamburg, Munich, Mexico City, and Tel Aviv, among others. It has also set an example for the peaceful execution of a single-day event on such a colossal scale. (The average number of visitors amounts to approximately 500,000. Compare this to the total population of German cities like Frankfurt (Main) at 646,000 and Hanover at 516,000).
Within the global network of this musical genre, Dr. Motte stands – individually and as an artist – for continuing development, exchange, and understanding.
Dr. Motte works as a DJ and is booked worldwide. He also releases productions internationally on his labels Praxxiz and Space Teddy. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
